Study by Amount, Not Hours

How many hours you studied today says nothing about how far you actually got. Why your study goals should be set in amount, not time.

“Whatever plan I make, I already know I won’t study. I sit for three or four hours with a book, but I just can’t study.”

It’s a line I saw in a study community. Sitting at a desk for three or four hours is no small thing. And still, they say nothing got studied. Why?

I don’t think the problem is the person. The problem is the unit they’re measuring their studying in. Time.

The illusion of time

Most study plans talk about time and timetables. We copy something that looks like a school schedule into a planner. English from 9 to 11, math from 11 to 1. Time matters in learning, sure. But the moment time becomes the center of the plan, what’s actually supposed to happen inside those blocks disappears, and all you’re left with is empty slots. If you built your plan around time just to get started on something, well, that’s less a study plan than a calendar.

Think about it. Why do we make study plans at all? To prepare for an exam, to build a skill, to be a little better than yesterday. So the real goal is a score, a pass, a version of yourself that’s sharper than before. Then what’s the input that actually produces that result? This is where most people reach for time, and get it wrong.

Take the 10,000-hour rule that Malcolm Gladwell wrote about in Outliers. People fixate on the word “hours” and pour everything into filling up 10,000 of them. But the 10,000 hours that make a world-class expert aren’t filled by repeating an activity 10,000 times. They’re the sum of deliberate practice, the hours where you push yourself and take feedback on what you’re doing well and badly. The total still matters. But what you fill those hours with comes first.

Do you become a master of brushing your teeth by brushing every day? You’ve probably had a day where your tooth hurt and you ended up at the dentist anyway, after brushing the whole time. Keep doing something the way you’ve always done it, and that time doesn’t count toward becoming an expert. The three or four hours at the desk are no different.

Time only measures that you were there

There’s a thing called Parkinson’s Law. Work expands to fill the time available for it. This isn’t just folk wisdom either. It’s been confirmed again and again in psychology experiments (Brannon et al., 1999). Set a three-hour target and you’re more likely to drag your feet and drift off task. And three hours tells you nothing about what exactly you should be doing, or whether doing that much is even enough.

There’s a deeper problem. Time can’t measure how far you’ve come. “I studied three hours today,” translated precisely, only means “I sat at my desk for three hours today.” Whether you got through one page or ten in those three hours, the sentence says nothing. Time measures that you were present, not that you got anywhere.

Which is why time is easy to fake. Read the same line five times in a daze, highlight a few sentences, and the clock ticks on all the same. This is why three or four hours at the desk can come to nothing. The person filled the time. The time just didn’t prove anything as it filled.

So, amount

Anders Ericsson, the psychologist behind that idea of deliberate practice, put exactly this question to studying. He and his colleagues looked at how college students’ study time related to their grades (Plant, Ericsson, et al., 2005). The sheer amount of time studied explained almost nothing about their grades. Sitting longer didn’t pull the grades up with it. Time only meant something once you factored in the quality of what filled it.

So the same lesson from the 10,000 hours holds for exam study too. What matters isn’t the total time logged at the desk, but what you filled it with. And “what you filled it with” can’t be captured by the unit of time. To capture it, you have to change the unit. From time, to amount.

The reason amount works is simple. Amount measures actual output. If you got through 14 pages today, you really did get through 14 pages. It’s clear whether you finished or not, done or not done. And small wins stack up day after day. None of that endless “was it enough?” that time-based goals leave you with.

A plan that recalculates when you fall behind

Of course, if you plan purely by amount, your completion rate can swing with your performance. You thought you’d solve 100 problems in three hours and you don’t get through half. Or you finish in under an hour. When the plan turns out to be too much for your goal, you have to adjust: cut the total amount, add study time, or push the deadline.

Here’s the heart of it. Finishing a fixed textbook by exam day is, in the end, arithmetic. The amount left, divided by the days left. “Put in more time” isn’t a plan. “X pages a day” is a plan. What some people need isn’t a harder plan, but a plan that recalculates when they fall apart. Even someone who kept collapsing under a fixed calendar timetable finally gets rolling once they start recalculating each time against the amount remaining, not the percent done.

The thing is, if you’re looking at Todait, you’re probably running several plans at once. Honestly, time has its place

If you’ve read this far and you’re asking “so is time useless, then?”, no. There are absolutely moments when time is the right unit.

A timed mock exam. Speed drills where you solve within a set window. Practice that builds focus and stamina. For these, time is the point. Someone prepping for an exam once said their accuracy had gone up but they kept getting stuck on time management. They’re right. Accuracy and speed are separate skills, and speed has to be built with the clock running.

So here’s a clean way to put it. Amount is the backbone of coverage. Time is a tool for sharpening specific skills. Build the skeleton out of amount, and pull time out only for training where time itself is the point, like speed or focus. Order matters. Decide what to do today by amount first, then attach the time to do it with your full attention. Only when the amount comes first does time finally mean something.

A goal you can finish

A plain time goal has no end. Because the number of hours says nothing about what you actually got done toward your goal, we always get up from the desk carrying that nagging “was that enough?” No end, so no resting easy either.

An amount goal is different. It has an end. Finish today’s amount, and you’re done. Only then can you rest easy. Only a goal you can finish lets you rest. (And maybe Todait can help you rest a little easier.)

Switching to amount isn’t hard. Just three things today.

  1. Write today’s goal as a number of pages or problems, not hours.
  2. Divide the amount left until your exam by the days left, and set today’s share.
  3. Finish today’s share, then stop and rest easy.
